Pursuing the aim to enhance and give boost to enrolment in Higher Education, University Grant Commission has proposed Rashtriya Uchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Under this programme, the CBCS hasbeen introduce with a vision to enhance the quality of education.The UGC CBCS system has been approved and adopted by the Department of Higher Education and SPU Mandi since session 2023-24 and the admission for the session 2023-24 will also be in accordance with the system.
1.Core Course: 6 Discipline Specific Core Courses (DSC) (2 per subject) in B. Sc. & 4 Discipline Specific Core Courses(DSC)(2 per subject)and 2 Courses of English and Hindi in B.A. B.Com.
The papers under this category are going to be taught uniformly across all universities with 30°0 deviation proposed in the draft.The purpose of fixing core papers is to ensure that all the institutions follow a minimum common curriculum so that each institution. university adheres to common minimum standard. Also, the course designed for papers under this category aims to cover the basics that a student is expected to imbibe in that particular discipline.A course,which should compulsorily be studied by a candidate as a core requirement is termed as a Core course.
2.Elective Course: Generally, a course which can be chosen from a pool of courses and which may be very specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline subject of study or which provides an extended scope orwhich enables an exposure to some other discipline/subject/domain or nurtures the candidates proficiency skill is called an Elective Course.
Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Course: (2 each for regular courses): Elective courses offered under the main discipline subject of study are referred to as Discipline Specific Elective. The list provided under this category are suggestive in nature and each University has complete freedom to suggest their own papers under this category based on their expertise, specialization, requirements, scope and need. The University Institute may also offer discipline related Elective courses of interdisciplinary nature(to be offered by main discipline subject of study).
Generic Elective(GE)Course: (2 each for B.A. B.Com. regular courses): An elective course chosen from an unrelated discipline subject,with an intention to seek exposure beyond disciplines of choice is called a Generic Elective.The purpose of this category of papers is to offer the students the option to explore disciplines of interest beyond the choices they make in Core and Discipline Specific Elective papers. The list pros ided under this category arc suggestive in nature and each University has complete freedom to suggest their own papers under this category based on their expertise, specialization, requirements, scope and need.
P.S. : A core course °tiered in a discipline subject may be treated as an elective by other discipline subject and vice versa and such electives may also be referred to as Generic Elective.
3.Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC): The Ability Enhancement(AEI Courses may be of two kinds: Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC) and Skill EnhancementCourses (SEC). "AECC" courses are the courses based upon the content that leads to Knowledge enhancement: I. Environmental Science and ii. English/HindiNILCommunication. These are mandatory for all disciplines.SEC courses are value-based and/or skill-based and are aimed at providing hands-on-training,competencies,skills etc.
Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses(AECC): Environmental Science.English Communication Hindi Communication-MIL Communication.
Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) 14 for regular courses): These courses may be chosen from a pool of courses designed to provide value-based and or skill-based knowledge and should contain both theory and lab hands-on training field work. The main purpose of these courses is to provide students life-skills in hands-on mode so as to increase their employability. The list provided under this category are suggestive in nature and each University has complete freedom to suggest their own papers under this category based on their expertise,specialization,requirements,scope and need.
Practical/tutorials(One each with core and discipline generic specific elective paper):
The list of practical provided is suggestive in nature and each university has the freedom to add/subtract/edi practical from the list depending on their faculty and infrastructure available.Addition will however be of similar nature
1. An Undergraduate degree in Humanities/ Social Sciences/ Commerce may be awarded if a student completes 4 core courses each in two disciplines of choice, 2 core courses each in English and Hindi/MIL,respectively,2Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC), minimum 4 Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), 2 courses each from a list of Discipline Specific Elective courses based on the two disciplines of choice selected above, respectively, and two courses from the list of Generic Electives courses.
2. An undergraduate degree in science disciplines may be awarded if a student completes 4 core courses each in three disciplines of choice, 2 Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses (AECC), minimum 4 Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) and 2 courses each from a list of Discipline Specific Elective courses based on three disciplines of choice selected above, respectively.
3. For the purpose of computation of work-load the following mechanism may be adopted:
Age limitation for admission 1st year Class(Ordinance3.3):The Students who has attained the age of 23 years (25 years for girls students only), the vice chancellor shall have the powers to permit age relaxation for reasons to be recorded in writing upto a maximum of six months.The upper age limit to be raised by three years in case SC/ ST Student
Relaxation for SC/ST students:
Note:- As per instructions contained vide letter No Shiksha-H (8)9(2) II-7-6-DE, H.P, dated 20-6-92 the students belonging to SC/ST will be given 5% relaxation of marks for the purpose of admission.
For II Year & III Year students: The combination of same main/additional subject at 1st year/2nd Year level shall continue.As per letter no. 4-9-2007-SPU (Acad) dated 23-6-08, the admission to BA/BCom II year and III Year students will be held according to roll on system without waiting for the declaration of resultby H.P.U.
The admission of students migrating during same session from one affiliated college or institution (including the Directorate of Correspondence Courses) to another affiliated college or institution (including the Directorate of Correspondence Courses)shall be governed by the regulations framed by the Executive Council of the H.P.U.in this regard from time to time.
In order to be eligible to appear in the University examination, a candidate should have to put in 75% attendance in each of the concerned courses in theory as well as in practical. Provided that in thecase of a candidate provisionally admitted to a higher class, but reverted to the lower class, as provided therein, this condition shall only be required to be fulfilled in respect of attendance or assignments as the case may befrom the date of his/her reversion to the lower class.
(b) A candidate on rolls of a college affiliated to or maintained by University, shall be admittedto the examination on production of a certificate from the Principal of his/her college show- ing that he/she has obtained in House Examination:
A student should secure a minimum of 20% in each subject or 25% in aggregate out of a total internal minor/ house examinations for awarding him 45% marks of internal assessment and 5% marks for attendance.
For enrolment of a student under e-examination system, the fee has to be deposited through SBI branch only; whereas, some other CBS enabled banks have also been authorised for depositing the examination fees. All the students at the semester end have to online fill their examination forms and deposit requisite fee through challan generated by this process and only thereafter they can get their roll number slip from online portal. Students must keep secure their ID and password for future. In every semester at the end for university examination they will have to fill the e- examination forms through this ID and password generated in first semester. B.A. III year students will have to fill offline examination form as per previous years practice.

Note:Core subject will comprise two papers and the Elective/Other Subject will also comprise two papers. Therefore students of B.A. 1st Year are required to take eight papers in all.

1. Inter-institution migration (including from one college to another as well as from a college to the ICDEOL and vice versa) of students will be allowed when no objection is obtained from both the relieving and receiving institution (signed by their respective principals/ directors) to ascertain especially that the Main/Other subjects being studied by the migrating student are available in the receiving institution.
2. The migrated students must bring with him/her.
3. After the migration has been sanctioned and notified by the university the student must join the second college within the given period i.e.by the date given by the university.
